If one metric dipped earlier or later, it might not be the primary cause but a separate issue.

Example: Among three potential drivers, “Driver #3” shows a significant drop (highlighted in red) compared to the previous period and last year, while Drivers #1 and #2 remain relatively stable. This suggests Driver #3 is the main factor behind the overall metric decline.

By Step 3, you should have a prime suspect, a particular driver metric that moved dramatically and in sync with your KPI drop. Step 4 is about pinpointing where and among whom that change happened. To do this, slice the affected metric (and the main metric, if useful) into meaningful segments. Start broad, then narrow down. Common breakdowns include:

Customer or Market Segment: Determine whether the issue is widespread or concentrated within a specific audience group (e.g., new vs. returning customers, demographic groups, B2B vs B2C, or region). When performing these breakdowns, let your dashboard do the heavy lifting. Use filters and visualizations to quickly surface major shifts. Color-code meaningful drops and gains so patterns stand out. And keep segment size in mind: a large percentage drop in a very small segment may have little impact overall. Prioritize segments that drive substantial volume and show meaningful change.
